FEELING FROSTY

FEELING FROSTY - July 14, 2010 - Fairbanks, Alaska

JOURNALING:  We visited the Ice Museum with its fantastic ice sculptures and watched a demonstration on how the ice is carved from huge chunks with power tools.  I could not convince Matt to take a nap in the ice house.

PHOTOGRAPHS:  Angela Shetzer of Shetzers Photography

SUPPLIES USED: BasicGrey Granola patterned paper, Kraft cardstock, Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Faded Jeans, Stampabilities Black Ink, Doodlebug Designs Paper Frills in Lily White, EK Success Corner Rounder, Gel Writer, Sheer Shimmer Spritz in Frost, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Denim blue, Liquid Pearls in White Opal, Stickles in Star Dust, Diamond Glaze, Letter Stencils, Cricut Expression with MSSeasonal cartridge, SCAL with snowflake and journal tag svg shapes

TECHNIQUE NOTES:  I'm sure you are like me and have lots of those plastic letter templates laying around.  I decided that I wanted to use on this layout so I went about "building" my title of Feeling Frosty.  I started out by tracing the letters on my kraft background paper with a pencil.  I lightly erased the pencil marks so they would not show through on my final image.  Then I traced all the outlines of the letters with small dots using my Liquid Pearls.  Once that was dry, I filled the inside of the letters with my Star Dust Stickles.  After even more drying time, I filled in the letters with Diamond Glaze to give them so dimension and shine.  Perfect title with no alphabets or Cricut needed.

ISLA GAIA

ISLA GAIA - May 1, 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas

JOURNALING: Isla Gaia, a female nesting Kemp's Ridley sea turtle was released with a satellite tracker attachment to monitor her movements.  We watched her release from Isla Blanca beach.

SUPPLIES USED:  Roam papers by K&Co, Happy Trails borders by K&Company, corner rounder by EK Success,

TECHNIQUE TIP:  OK, so I broke my own rule about having white edges exposed on my photographs.  Here I actually decided to make the white edges stand out on my photos by taking a piece of sandpaper from my wonderful hubby's toolbox and sanding the edges of my photos to leave a nice textured white edge that helps them stand out from the beige background that I chose to mat them on.  This technique works well when you have mostly dark photos such as I have here to give an added separation from the background without adding paper and bulk with matting.

Distant Shores

I have finally started on scrapping the Alaska portion of our trip that started a year ago July.

DISTANT SHORES - July 6, 2010 - Top of the World Highway, Alaska

JOURNALING:  We had no idea that our trip to Alaska would grow to be over 5 months long.  We stayed so long that the snow forced us to take the ferry out instead of driving.  July 6 to December 3, 2010

PHOTOGRAPHS:  Matt & Angela Shetzer of Shetzers Photography

SUPPLIES USED:  PageMaps March, 2011 sketch; DCWV Natural cardstock; Array parchment cardstock; Gartner Airplane Voyage patterned paper; BasicGrey Manila Brief patterned paper; Kraft cardstock; Judikens Treasure cube rubber stamp; Stampin Up Sanded rubber stamp; Cricut Expression w/ 50 State cartridge; SCAL software; Britannic Bold & CK Letter Home fonts; Pennant and tag svg; Doodlebug Design Paper Frills in tangerine; Bazzill Just the Edge in Rio; American Crafts Precision Pen; Stampabilities Brown and Black ink; Tim Holtz distress ink in Antique Linen and Spiced Marmalade; Floss; Twine; Buttons; Alpha beads

TECHNIQUE NOTES:  In this layout, I really wanted to create a feeling that showed how long we explored, but really how little of the great state of Alaska that we actually saw.  I used the Cricut 50 states cartridge to cut out the shape of Alaska and then using Google Maps, I placed alpahbet beads to coordinate with everywhere that we spent at least one night.  I used the same alphabet beads to create a legend that gave all the important details of location name and dates.

When you are on vacation, don't forget to take photos of those road side signs.  What an easy way to make your photos do your journaling for you.

BIRD WATCHING

BIRD WATCHING - April 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas

JOURNALING: We watched in awe as this blue heron fished and then proceeded to swallow his catch whole.  South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center.

SUPPLIES USED:  Plantin Schoolbook Cricut cartridge, Roam patterned paper by K&Co, K&Co paper ribbon, Fiskars border punches, Cricut Expression for title

TECHNIQUE TIP:  I have a huge collection of journaling tags and of course when I see more, I have to buy them.  And then of course because I love to "save" my supplies, I use them only sparingly.  Ugh...  Well on this layout, I used one to do my actual journaling and then because I wanted to "save" another one, I traced the outside of shape onto a piece of cardstock and added it to the bottom of my photos to have a complete shape on the layout.

Don't forget that if you love the shape of an embellishment but it doesn't quite match the colors of your layout, you can always use it as a template and make your own.  Much cheaper to do this as well.

July Challenge at Filekutz - Free SVG

Its time for the July challenge with LisaJane at Filekutz.  Head on over to the Challenge Blog to take a look at this month's challenge and download this wonderful free svg cut file that LisaJane has generously allowed us to use for this challenge.

Here is a photo of the great flowery border that can be used in the challenge.  Its a great leaf boarder with multiple sizes of flowers that can be layered and embellished in anyway you choose.

This page set unfinished for about a year before I finally found the right embellishment to tie it all together with LisaJane's flower and leaf boarder.  It is amazing how one small piece of embellishment can help the eye travel through the layout and bind it all together.

Hunting Birdies

HUNTING BIRDIES - April 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas

JOURNALING: South Padre Island - Nature & Birding Center

SUPPLIES USED:  Stamped Cricut cartridge, Tahiti Beach Stack by DCWV

TECHNIQUE TIP:  I love the use of color blocking on a layout.  I love the simple lines and how my photos seem to pop off the page.  However, I don't always like how blocky and simple the layouts end up looking.  On this layout, I decided to soften it up a bit and round my corners and layer some border strips with softer lines.  the overall result is a great balance of photos and corresponding colors to enhance our wildlife shots.

Calm Days

No matter how many flowers I purchase, I never seem to have the right color so I decided to purchase quite a few of the cream colored paper flowers.  With these, I can use either glimmer mists, stamps, or ink to recolor them to the perfect color.  In this layout, I wanted to match the blue and green and my stash of flowers just didn't have the right shades of the color.  A little glimmer mist created the green flowers and the blue ones were created with the help of stamps and ink.  Perfect match for this double page layout!!

CALM DAYS - April 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas
JOURNALING: One of our favorite places to visit on calm days as the Birding & Nature Center.  We enjoyed the beautiful board walks and the peaceful setting watching the various birds and the alligators.

CATCH A WAVE - April 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas

One of the drawbacks of using a dark background paper is that it can make your photos appear darker and less apt to "pop" off your page.  While my photos of my wonderful husband kiteboarding were very bright, I felt they needed a little more distinction from the dark black paper by DCWV.  I grabbed my white Sharpie Paint Pen and edged the photos with it.  I was able to achieve the distinct boundaries that I was looking for without having to add another layer of paper to my layout.  Overall, it was cheaper and had the same effect.  I am always up for saving my supplies and creating the same look in a multitude of ways.

OUR LIFE

Life in a 34 foot 5th wheel is not for everyone, but we have loved it over the past year.  Although as this layout shows, we were not too sure as it seemed we spent more time fixing the RV than enjoying and relaxing.  You can see my scrapping space at the dining room table.

OUR LIFE - April 2010 - South Padre Island, Texas

JOURNALING: We spent our first month relaxing & repairing the RV.  We were sorry to leave the beach.

SUPPLIES USED:  Crimper, Tahiti Stack by DCWV, Foam stamps, Inkadinkado Coastal stamps,

TECHNIQUE TIP:  I love all the bold papers in DCWV's Tahiti Stack but I wanted a little texture to my background but had to be careful not to overwhelm the layout.  I started out with a couple sheets of DCWV's Neutral cardstock in off white and proceeded to stamp all sorts of travel related stamps with an off white paint around the edges where they would peak out from under my bold paper strips.  The overall effect is a great texture without adding lots of detail that distracts from the photos.

Grapefruit (South Texas Style)

This double page layout is actually one of my favorites and not just because it features my adorable hubby...  Don't be afraid to get close to your subjects for a close up of the "action" as I did with with the grapefruit in the juicer.

GRAPEFRUIT - April 2010 - South Padre Island, TexasJOURNALING: South Padre Island, Texas. We discovered the farmer's market on Saturday mornings. Our favorite purchase was a huge bag of grapefruit for only $5. We would squeeze them for the most delicious juice. TECHNIQUE TIP:  I love patterned paper (who doesn't), but I do sometimes struggle with mixing and matching the more bold and vibrant colors.  In this layout, I knew that I needed to add some color as my photos were pretty bland and what better color than orange since my subjects are grapefruits.  I used a great bold pattern from My Mind Eye and then gave it additional color with a bright orange strip of paper.  The bold colors work as the underlying patterned paper ties it all together.  A punched border gives some relief from all the straight lines of the layout to create some movement and softness.

Bluebird Patrol

Each year as spring comes to Houston, my father in law carefully watches and maintains the bluebird houses on the Champions golf course.  Last year we took a wild golf cart ride to check out the many nests along the fairways.  This page is from last year when there were only eggs at the time we were in Houston.  Since we are in Houston now and planning another bluebird tour this afternoon, we hope to have babies that we can photograph.

Bluebird Patrol - March 29, 2010 - Houston, TXJOURNALING: Our next stop was Houston to see Ted & Annie. We enjoyed the tour of the bluebird houses at the golf course, although Ted does look like a thief here. Cherished Family Times

Since we don't have any children, I don't get to use pink and little girl colors very often.  So I always chase my adorable little nieces around with the camera and enjoy when I get to use pink on a layout.

For more layouts using pink as the primary color, visit my PINK GALLERY HERE.

Cherished Family Times - March 22 to 29, 2010 - Joplin, MissouriJOURNALING: Our first stop on the trip was to visit with my family in MO. Home away from home

For those who don't know me very well, you may not be aware that all my scrapping activities right now are taking place inside our 34 foot fifth wheel as we travel around North America.  The layout below showcases our "Home Away from Home" that will be our home for the next several years.

In this layout, I wanted a nice homey feel so I decided to use lots of stitching to mimic a quilted look.  Most of the photos were taken by the dealer when we were purchasing it as it is nowhere near this uncluttered now!!!

Home Away From Home - January 3, 2010 - Colfax, CaliforniaJOURNALING: Matt left Colorado to beat bad weather on Jan 1. He was on his way to Colfax, CA to pick up the fifth wheel. After months of searching for this exact model, we finally found it. he would spend 32 hours to drive 2,274 miles round trip. The Landing

Wow, I can't believe its been over a week since I last posted, but that is good as I have lots of new layouts to share.  I am still working on my Alaska Eagle Album and will have 26+ layouts in it by the time I am done.  That isn't all of the wonderful photos but then of course, we can never scrap all our photos no matter how much we might want to.

The Landing is one of the few two page layouts that will be in this album.  This album has been tough for me as its a huge break from my normal style of two page layouts with lots of photos.  I don't think I've ever done as many 1 page layouts with only 1 photo in all my scrapping time.  Its fun as I get to focus on showcasing just a few photos and then let my papers and embellishments tell the rest of the story.  Journaling is also pretty minimal.

This page in particular was tough as it uses purple and I am not a purple scrapping kind of girl!!!  But I thought it worked great with the hues of the photos and lets face it, with only brown, white & yellow in my photos, I need some different color combinations.

OVER THE MOUNTAINS AND THROUGH THE WOODS

I finally finished my last layout of our trip through Canada to reach Alaska in July of last year.  Now I get to start on some of our wonderful Alaska Photos and continue with the Bald Eagles.  I love this paper pad from K&Company, it has such fun cutouts and papers.  Its a departure from my normal colors, but that is what makes it fun.

OVER THE MOUNTAINS AND THROUGH THE WOODS... - July 6, 2010 - Dawson City, Yukon, Canada
JOURNALING:  To continue our drive on the "TOP OF THE WORLD" highway into Alaska, we had to start out on the small ferry.  We fit - but just barely.

PHOTOGRAPHS:  Angela Shetzer of Shetzers Photography {http://www.shetzers.com}

SUPPLIES USED:  K&Company Road Trip patterned paper and embellishments, Nick Bantock's Charcoal Grey ink by Ranger, DCWV Cafe Mediterranean cardstock, Bazzill Just the Edge borders, Inkadinkado Travel Words & Road Trip stamps, Hero Arts Travel Frames stamp

TECHNIQUE NOTES:  I used a mat that I had torn the edges to ink the large borders on the photos.  I applied the ink with a sponge to give nice even coverage.  Once the ink was dry, I sanded the edges of the photos with sandpaper to distress them and help them stand out against the matting.

Here are the close up details of both pages...

SS Graveyard

I decided to take a break from the Bald Eagles and try to finish up the last couple of remaining pages for last summer's trip to Alaska through Canada.  I have just 2 sets of double page layouts to finish up before getting into all our Alaska photos.

I loved the sketch over at Let's Scrap this week and decided it made a great starting point for these photos.
SS GRAVEYARD - July 6, 2010 - Dawson City, Yukon, Canada

JOURNALING: It's hard to believe that this town of 1,500 was over 30,000 in 1898. The SS (Steamships) were a huge factor in the movement of people and goods but when they were obsolete, they were brought to this graveyard to slowly decay into the river. Such a sad farewell to these unique riverboats.

SUPPLIES USED: Tim Holtz Lost & Found patterned paper, Zutter Distrezz-It-All, Sizzix Tim Holtz Notebook embossing folder, Bazzill Just the Edge borders, The Paper Company Kraft cardstock, George & Basic Shapes Cricut Cartridge, My World Cricut Cartridge, Life is a Beach Cricut Cartridge, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists, Stampabilities ink, Diamond Glaze, DCWV Neutrals cardstock, Font: AKADora, Hero Arts Circular Designs stamps, 3-9-11 Sketch by Cheri ONeill at http://letsscrap.ning.com

I was so lucky to be chosen as Let's Scrap's Inspiration of the Week.  Below is a copy of the sketch in its original form.  I modified the number of photos and the journaling area to make it fit my needs a bit better.  I also decided to use some different embellishments in place of all the circles so I added some faded clocks and some ships wheels to those areas to help create the feeling I wanted in this layout.  I used Tim Holtz's Lost and Found paper collection which is one of my favorites but I always find it hard to use as it is so colorful.  I think it plays into the mood of the photos.  Let's Scrap is a great place for weekly inspiration if you like sketches, I would encourage you to become a member of their site and play along.
